A day after PDP convention, Jonathan, Obasanjo, govs meet
From JULIANA TAIWO-OBALONYE, Abuja
Barely 24 hours after the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Special Convention and the emergence of a faction of the party led by former vice president Atiku Abubakar, President Goodluck Jonathan and former President Olusegun Obasanjo, worshipped together at the Aso Villa Chapel, Abuja yesterday. He had joined Jonathan and his wife, Dame Patience, to worship.
Visiting President of Benin Republic, Boni Yayi, was also at the service.
Both leaders later met behind closed doors at the State House, Abuja. They were believed to have discussed issues bordering on the nation and the fallout of last Saturday’s convention. After the service, both men visited the children’s church from where the trio and the Chief of Staff to the President, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, went into the President’s residence for lunch where they continued with the parley.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, confirmed the meeting, but did not give details of what transpired.
President Jonathan had on Saturday said that doom’s day prophesy about the PDP breaking up before 2015 general elections will be disappointed, noting that it was the only party that has retained its identity, logo, slogan and has not fused into other parties.
The emergence of a splinter group led by Atiku came immediately after Jonathan’s speech.
The splinter group, which calls itself the “New PDP,” also include seven governors who had allegedly formed a new political party and are seeking registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the name of Voice of the People (VOP).
They include Governors Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Alhaji Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara) and Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers).
In the group are prominent members of the newly-registered Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM), also led by Atiku.
